Serial Experiment Lain
I am particularly proud of how this piece captures a tangible sense of atmosphere and depth through purely traditional, hands on medium constraints. Successfully balancing the stark, geometric repetition of the chain link fence with the softer, organic textures of the character’s features allowed me to push the boundaries of value contrast and line weight using graphite alone. Achieving that intense, dramatic shadow play beneath the chin while maintaining the delicate, expressive detail in the eyes feels like a technical milestone in my ability to convey a complex, claustrophobic mood without relying on digital post-processing. Seeing the industrial grit of the background harmonize so effectively with the clean, stylized character lines makes this a highly rewarding execution of texture and composition.
The Saloon
I am incredibly proud of how this piece handles complex, multi-figure storytelling and perspective using a crisp, high contrast ink style. Nailing the first person point of view placing the viewer directly at the card table with a royal flush in hand was a deliberate choice to create an immersive, narrative-driven experience. I really enjoyed the challenge of balancing dense character work, from the macabre elegance of the skeleton poker players to the bustling background bar scene, all while maintaining absolute visual clarity through flat black shapes and clean line work. Managing the scale and depth to guide the viewer’s eye seamlessly from the foreground cards up into the lively, chaotic saloon crowd feels like a massive step forward in my compositional staging and world-building capabilities.
